Communities can break apart and disintegrate. All it takes is for one person to cast doubt, sow discord, evoke fear, and discontentment breeds, and resentment festers, leading to an environment where everyone is obsessed with either raising false idols or weeding out those that don’t belong, and a climate of paranoia where members of the community see threats at every turn. In this triple bill that looks at toxic villagers, crazed fans, and the media, we ask “When is a community harmful?”
Featuring:
Housekeeping Improv (Philippines)
Portraying how communities can be harmful when they are formed based on principles that benefit one and not all, join the dwellers of the toxic Housekeeping Village as they try to weed out the different, odd, and unknown. Will the community stand firm based on their toxic ideals? Housekeeping Improv is the official house team of Third World Improv, the premiere improv school in the Philippines. Formed in 2019, the group regularly stages packed shows across Manila. From musical long-form to punchy short-form shows, Housekeeping Improv prides itself in representing the different flavours of Filipino improv through its stories, scenes and songs.
Grace Under Fire (Singapore)
There’s a new Fan Club in town – perhaps it’s dedicated to Wonder Woman, Alain de Botton, or the zero-calories boba. Gaining entry into this exclusive club demands more than mere admiration—it calls for a display of unconventional fervour and devotion. What makes a fan club of this kind stick? Grace Under Fire is a Singapore-based improv troupe which enjoys performing relationship-focused improv to tickle the mind and warm the heart. They consciously seek to explore the deeper and more emotionally charged aspects of life and relationships while having a good laugh too.
Tabloids (International)
Media outlets like to sensationalise and publish gossipy content which serves mostly as entertainment and watercooler fodder. Through the use of tabloid headlines, enjoy a show created by V4 Improv Connect that highlights and celebrates the quirks and idiosyncrasies of local communities. With a cast derived from a workshop from Hon Chong, Artistic Director of Funnylicious Theater in Bratislava, Slovakia, 'Tabloids' features a mix of local and international improvisers in the performance - who will explore and reinterpret light-hearted, funny, and unusual local stories, unique to the Singapore community.
